### We Need A RESET
Every year I watch the annual TV specials about 9/11 as my way to honor all of the innocent lives lost that day. It sickens me to be reminded but that seems a small price to pay. Invariably it serves as a great RESET of my priorities when I consider all the people that suffered losses that I did not suffer.
I think everyone remembers where they were on the morning of September 11, 2001. For me, I was living in the Washington DC metro area and passed through the Pentagon parking lot on my way to my office in Clarendon, Virginia, about 10 minutes before American Airlines Flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon. I saw the Pentagon on fire from my office and experienced the hysteria of Washington D.C. preparing for more attacks.
As awful as that day was, something great came out of it for a period of time. This entire country was united. Things like political party, age, socioeconomic status, education, race, and gender didn’t matter. We were all Americans, and we were united in our outrage that we were attacked in our homeland. People had American flags in their yards, on their cars, in their windows and patriotism was evident everywhere you looked.
A lot has changed in 22 years. We, as a nation, have become so divided that it is almost impossible to find common ground. In the 24-hour news cycle that we live in now, there is no good news anymore. It’s time to find the common ground again. I challenge all of you to dig deep and ask what you can each do individually to make this state and this nation better and to find common ground. Remember – unity not unanimity.
Let’s take this state and nation back!
